Harmonize Your Journey: Learn Piano with an Expert Guide
Hello, my name is Uma, and I am a pianist and specialized piano instructor in Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, VA. I provide quality in-class, or in-home piano lessons. I offer piano lessons to children and adults of all ages, and from beginner through advanced. While you are here researching the best music instructor for you, please consider the benefits of becoming one of my students. Whether your child wants to begin playing his or her first notes on piano… a college student looking for help with your music major… or someone seeking a professional career… I know that everyone’s learning process is unique, so lessons are personalized to suit your individualized needs. This ensures that you choose your goals, and accomplish them in a way that works best for you.
Why piano? How does it differ from other instruments?
Piano students obtain a special path than most other instrumental students, and the reason is simple: piano is a solo instrument. Though there are many piano pieces with ensemble and duet music, and although advanced pianists often play with choral groups and instrumentalists, or with orchestras, piano learning is a private activity that leads to a solo performance. One of the greatest advantages of private piano lessons, is individual attention. Lessons focus on the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Piano is a compound activity that requires the student, to focus on sensors such as the ear, eye, touch, and intellectual understanding. Each student reaches these essentials in a different way.
Getting excellent results
My unique method includes an individual approach to my student’s needs that will help prevent students from getting bored or frustrated. Some students may progress slowly and may want to quit, but with my techniques, I ensure that students are not just learning to play, but also enjoying the music in the process. I take the initiative to study my students, and design a teaching method that suits their individual needs. Keeping up with student’s needs and progress are important. My students simply learn in a fun and effective manner.

Basic requirements and information for taking piano classes.
I teach individual students of all ages. My class consists of very diverse students of different ages, levels, and goals. I offer many options of taking piano lessons. Typically for those students who take the lessons for their general education, we meet on a weekly basis and a common session is 45 minutes long, though options also include 30 or 60 minute long sessions, depending on a preference and each individual student’s capability. For those who pursue a carrier of becoming professional pianists, I recommend taking the lessons 2-3 times a week with the same variety of the session duration, although it requires much more practicing as well.
Is there a minimum repertoire per year?
Student’s repertoire requirement includes a minimum 5 pieces per year (3 of the compositions from contrasting style periods – Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary). Learning techniques, such as etudes, scales and arpeggios, are also an important component of my teaching.
What can lead to become a successful piano player?
My mission as a piano instructor is to believe in everyone’s ability to play any kind of musical instrument, especially the piano, at almost any age. The student’s desire to learn and be disciplined, play a huge role. Music is like a universal language and the skills you learn will last your entire life.
What plan is right for you? The duration of piano lessons can vary depending on several factors, including student’s age, level of experience, attention span, and personal preferences. Here are some general guidelines:
Beginner students (children and adults): For young children or beginners with limited attention spans, 30-minute lessons are often recommended initially. As the student progresses and becomes more comfortable, lessons can be extended to 45 minutes or 60 minutes, allowing for more comprehensive instruction and practice time.
Intermediate to advanced students: As students advance in their piano skills, longer lesson durations are beneficial to cover more complex techniques, repertoire, music theory, and interpretation. 45-minute or 60-minute lessons are common for intermediate and advanced students.
Adult learners with busy schedules or limited practice time may find 30-minute lessons suitable for their needs. However, if they have the availability and are committed to more extensive practice, longer lessons can be considered.

What are the benefits of playing piano?
Playing piano can benefit in different ways such as, increasing brain development, eye-hand coordination, fine motor skills, discipline, reducing anxiety, stress and depression and much more. Studies show that playing piano can improve or enhance people’s brains. This is because musical training can have major and long-term impact on the brain, creating additional neural connections in childhood that can last a lifetime, and thus help compensate for cognitive declines later in life.
Do you need theory in order to become a piano performer?
Absolutely! Music theory is the knowledge of basic music grammar which includes scale and interval singing. Music theory is taught at every level of music education, from primary through graduate level university study. It improves recognition of intervals (perfect fifths, minor sixths, diminished sevenths, etc.), and strengthens the understanding of music theory.
Why is music theory so important? It is because, people who use some kind of solfeggio system (solmization), tend to improve fluency with pitch faster and more systematically than people who use no system.
My lessons can help with sight-reading, which means the ability to read and play (or sing) at first sight. Learning to sight-read piano music is a similar discipline that will significantly develop your skills as a piano or keyboard player. Like learning to read words, it will take time and practice, but it’s a skill you will come to appreciate your entire life.
I teach a special technique which helps to improve your skills easier and much faster.
The Russian Piano School stands out as one of the best and highly distinctive compared to others. I offer a unique method that will help all my students learn how to play the piano while embracing exceptional technique values.
For instance, instead of the common two-octave scales taught in the Virginia area and throughout the US, I prefer teaching the “Russian school” scales, which encompass four octaves and include contrary motions. These scales are a fantastic way to enhance technique abilities, suitable for both children and beginners, as well as advanced students or adults. It’s important to remember that scales are fundamental to numerous compositions by various composers, making the study of new pieces much easier. I cover a wide range of scales, chords, and arpeggios suitable for all skill levels.

The Stage is Set: Embrace the Music, Embrace the Moment
Piano recitals are important as they provide my students with invaluable performance experiences that help build confidence, stage presence, and the ability to handle nerves. They offer tangible goals for students to work towards, motivating consistent practice and allowing them to showcase their hard work and accomplishments. Recitals also foster the development of interpretation skills, encouraging my students to communicate emotions and tell stories through their playing. Additionally, they create a sense of community among students, inspiring and learning from one another.
